Africa's biggest street party holds in Calabar

The 11th edition of Africa's most popular carnival took place in Calabar, capital of Cross River State, Nigeria recently. The annual event, an amazing display of African heritage, which features lots of colourful and creative costumes, with music, dance and competitions, is often regarded as Africa’s biggest street party.





 The theme of this year's edition is ‘Climate Change’.
Organised by the Cross River State government, this year's event was watched by over two million spectators, including top celebrities and Nollywood actors such as Patience Uzokwor (Mama G), Francis Odega, Joseph Benjamin and Kenneth Okonkwo.

Nine countries- Spain, France, Italy, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Burundi, Ghana and Brazil- participated in the carnival this year.



  Brief history of the carnival

The Calabar carnival which started in 2004, was created as part of the vision of making the Cross StateNigeria, the number one tourist destination for Nigerians and tourists all over the world. The carnival which begins every 1st December and lasts until 31st December, has boosted the cultural mosaic of the Nigerian people while entertaining millions of spectators within and outside the State, and boosting industry for all stakeholders especially the tourist sector.
