Sounds of voices in the deserted car park brought Amara back to reality. She tried to extricate herself from his embrace but he held her tight.
"Stay. Don't move," said Ebi, his face buried in her neck.
"I've to go. It's getting late," she said a bit shakily.
"Then, let's go somewhere more private, like my place?" he asked, his hand caressing her cheek.
No way, she thought. She had been carried away for a short while, lost her head. But no more.
She adjusted her clothes and reaching for the door said: "I can't. I've to go. Goodnight."
She got down and walked away. He came after her, but she ignored him, got into her car and drove away.
Later that night, as she lay in bed, and thought about the incident in his car, she wondered what had come over her. How could she have ended up kissing him and making out with him, after her vow to stay off men.
What was it about Ebi that made her resolve weaken, break all her rules of avoiding romantic entanglements as they had brought nothing but grief to her?
"You need to keep away from that man, avoid him like an infection," she said softly to herself as she turned on the pillow and tried to go to sleep.
She really tried. But Ebi was the problem. He would not let her be. He would call, send gifts and would personally visit her at work.
"What part of leave me alone don't you understand?" she asked in exasperation one evening
when he called her.
"I can't do that. Can't you see, Amara? You've bewitched me and I can't get you out of my mind," he said.
"So, I'm now a witch that casts spells?" she said in a light tone.
"Yes. A very beautiful one at that!" he responded, with a laugh.
She signed.
"Anyway, I've told you before, I don't want to get involved. With you or anyone else," she told him firmly.
"Ok. But that doesn't stop us from seeing each other occasionally, does it? We'll see how things go from there," he stated.
"Did you get the invitation I sent to you?" he asked sometime later. "I hope you can attend. It will mean a lot to me."
It was for a farewell party for a British director of his oil company who had retired and was returning home. She had received the IV together with a gift bag of perfumes and other items he had sent to her a few days before.
She had no intention of attending the party, holding that weekend at a top hotel in the city.
So why did she get dressed the evening of the party, taking special care of her appearance ensuring she looked her best?
The party was already in full swing with music blasting from speakers when she arrived the venue. She stood for a moment at the entrance of the hall, taking in the scene.
As she stepped in, a voice to her right said:
"Glad you were able to come."
She turned to meet Ebi's smiling face. "You look gorgeous," he said admiringly, taking in her appearance, his eyes lingering briefly on her curvy body accentuated by the form fitting dress she wore.
He held out his hand to her and she was about to take it when a young lady interrupted them.
"Ebi darling! I've been looking for you everywhere!" she said. She was holding a drink in her right hand while a cigarrette was in the other.
"Oh, you are here," said Ebi. Then turning to Amara, he did the introductions.
"This is Belema, my..."
"Fiancé!" Belema cut in quickly, a smug look on her face...
