My Mammy Water Girlfriend (2)

"Hey , man!" I've told you all I know! I've not seen the girl here! You think I'll see someone who fits your description and I won't remember? " Victor, the barman said in an exasperated tone.

Jay had been pestering him all night over the mystery lady he was looking for. It had been the same the weekend before, and the one before that. He was getting sick of it all.

He dragged his eyes from the picture of a sexy Nollywood actress he had been ogling on his phone, to look at Jay who sat dejectedly on a stool by the bar, nursing a drink.

He had been sitting there for most of the evening,  just drinking, sighing and gazing around as
if expecting someone.

He had known Jay for about a year since he started patronising the club and they had become quite friendly. He was a cheerful, friendly, fun loving young man who loved life.

He had never seen him look so dull before and all because of a woman!

Who was she anyway, and why was he searching so frantically for her, Victor wondered.

Maybe a girlfriend who he did something really bad to, to make her dump his sorry ass. Yes, that must it, he thought with a smirk.

He felt sorry for him though, so he said:

"Cheer up, man! I'll call you if she turns up," he offered.
"Thanks, Victor, "Jay said, perking up a bit. "She has this little birthmark on her right cheek. You should easily identify her with that."

"Alright!  Now move your lazy ass out of here! I'm sick of looking at your sad face!"

"Ok, ok! I'm off!" Jay said, downing the rest of his drink and going in search of Okey and the other friends they had come with that evening.

   ***
It was around 10 pm on Thursday night. Jay was on his way from work when he got the call.

He had driven past the main gate of the estate at Magodo where he lived but he quickly made a U-turn to link up at Berger then turn towards Ikeja where the Niteclub was.

He rushed in through the door and immediately made for the bar.

Victor nodded to his right on seeing him.

She was sitting at the lounge area, chatting with a man in a dark suit.

"Reena!" he said, his joy at seeing her again clearly visible on his face.

She looked up quickly. "Oh, it's you."

The man in the suit left and Jay sat down.

There were so many things he wanted to ask her- this lady that had been on his mind for weeks, and had even haunted his dreams at night.

But seeing her again, all he could do was stare fixedly at her, as if to take a mental picture of her he could look at whenever he wanted.

 Suddenly,  he blurted out:

"Why did you run away from me that night?"

"I had to. You were pissing me off with your questions."

"I've been searching everywhere for you," he confessed.

"Why? What do you want from me?" she asked sharply.

'You. I want you besides me. Not just for a day or two but...' he thought.

"I'll tell you later. First,  let me buy you a drink," Jay said, signaling a waiter passing by.

She nodded at the bottle of cream liquer on the low table.

"I've got one already," she said.

"Another one won't do any harm," he noted.

That night, Reena seemed to be in a chatty, more relaxed mood.

He got to know more about her- she was an only child and an orphan who lost both parents in an accident when she was 12.

"I grew up with different relatives. When I finished my nursing training and started work, I moved in with an uncle and his family who live in Festac Town. The wife, a very wicked woman made my life hell so I had to get my own place," she disclosed.

"And where's that?" asked Jay.

"Why do you want to know?" she demanded.

"Because," he said, drawing closer to her on the seat and placing his hand on her jean clad thigh. "I want to see you again."

She gazed at him searchingly, her eyes deep and penetrating as if trying to read his thoughts.

Then she took her liquer filled glass and took a sip.

Jay would have loved to spend the whole night with her but he had to leave home for work by 5 am. So, a little after midnight, he reluctantly left after arranging to meet up at the club on Saturday evening.

"I'll call you, " he said, as he walked away, happy he had been able to get her number and looking forward to seeing her again at the weekend...
